“Youth Group Urges Federal Government to Cover JAMB Registration Fees for Struggling Families”
The Association of Arewa Yoruba Youths (AAYY) has urgently called on the federal government to cover the JAMB registration fees for all eligible students across the country, highlighting the financial strain many parents are facing. In a statement, the group noted that last year, approximately 1.8 million students registered for the examination, and this number is expected to rise to 2 million this year.
Ambassador Lawal Hussein Taiye, National Coordinator of AAYY, pointed out that at an estimated cost of N7,000 per applicant, the total amount for 2 million students would amount to around N14 billion nationwide. He argued that this initiative would significantly ease the burden on parents and disadvantaged students, especially in light of the current economic challenges.
Hussein, who also heads the Tinubu Mukeso Group, criticized the federal government’s conditional cash transfer program of N75,000, claiming it often fails to reach those most in need, instead being misused by politicians. He stressed the need for more transparent, digital methods of distributing aid, ensuring that financial assistance reaches the intended recipients.
He added, “By covering JAMB registration fees, the government can support countless families unable to afford the cost, enabling their children to take the exam and pursue higher education opportunities.”
The AAYY urged the administration under President Bola Tinubu to implement policies that would have a tangible, positive impact on Nigerians struggling with the harsh economic climate, particularly in ensuring that students are not excluded from essential educational opportunities due to financial constraints.
