Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has made a significant move to support 16 nursing graduates who were evacuated from Sudan amidst the ongoing conflict. The Governor on Thursday presented certificates to the 16 nursing students at the Government House in Gusau, the state capital.
A statement from the Governor’s spokesman, Sulaiman Bala Idris, revealed that the 66 Zamfara students, who were sponsored by the state government, were evacuated from Sudan in 2023 due to the escalating conflict in the country. Of these, 16 were nursing students who were unable to complete their final exams before the war interrupted their studies.
Governor Lawal, who had previously shown compassion for the students, directed the Zamfara State Commissioner for Education to coordinate with Sudan International University to conduct the exams for the final-year nursing students in Nigeria. The exams were successfully completed, and the university has since sent the certificates for all 16 students, which were presented to them by the Governor.
In his address, Governor Lawal commended the graduates for their resilience and encouraged them to be strong ambassadors for Zamfara. He highlighted the administration’s efforts to improve the state’s education sector, declaring a state of emergency in education to address the critical situation. He also noted the ongoing construction and rehabilitation of hospitals across the state, emphasizing the need for a skilled workforce to complement the infrastructure development.
“I am proud of you all,” Governor Lawal told the graduates. “We are investing substantial resources in education to build an improved society, and you are now part of that vision.”
In a remarkable gesture, the Governor announced that the 16 graduates would be granted automatic employment with the Zamfara State Government. The Head of Service will officially confirm their employment in the Zamfara Civil Service.
Governor Lawal’s initiative ensures that the state’s healthcare system will benefit from these qualified nursing professionals, providing a timely solution to the state’s healthcare needs.
