NiDCOM Rescues Trafficked Nigerian Woman from Iraq Amid Rising Concerns Over Human Trafficking

Officials from the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) in Jordan, which oversees Iraq, have successfully intervened to bring a 28-year-old Nigerian woman, Eniola Isaac, back home after she was trafficked to Iraq under false promises of a better life.

Isaac had reportedly endured severe abuse, physical assaults, and mistreatment by her employer in Iraq. After enduring these hardships, she appealed to Nigerian authorities for help to return home.

NiDCOM provided an update on Thursday via its official X handle, confirming that Isaac is expected to return to Nigeria on January 3rd, 2025, with the help of officials from the Nigerian mission in Jordan, who oversee Iraq. The statement also highlighted that another Nigerian woman, who had traveled to Iraq to work as a carer, was killed under suspicious circumstances, and the Nigerian government has requested an autopsy to determine the cause of her death.

NiDCOM issued a strong warning against unscrupulous agents who deceive young Nigerian women into traveling to Iraq with promises of better job opportunities, only to expose them to slavery, prostitution, and other dangers. The commission underscored the need for heightened vigilance to prevent further cases of trafficking.
