Political Shifts Brewing: Are More PDP Governors Preparing to Join APC?
Strong indications have surfaced suggesting that several governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) might be planning to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as the 2027 general elections draw near.
Sources reveal that these defections are not necessarily related to the ongoing and unresolved crises within the PDP, particularly those involving the National Working Committee (NWC) and some state or zonal factions. Instead, the moves appear to be part of strategic political maneuvering in anticipation of the upcoming elections.
Reports suggest that some governors have already begun cultivating ties with President Bola Tinubu, making visits to his Lagos residence. Others have extended invitations to him to commission projects in their states, where ongoing discussions are believed to be taking place. The chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, Senator Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, is said to be instrumental in these efforts, seeking to expand the APC’s influence ahead of 2027.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has notably called on his constituents to support President Tinubu, reinforcing his commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda. His statements were made during the opening of the 5th Edition of the Delta State Communication Workshop in Asaba, where he emphasized the need for continued collaboration with the federal government.
Similarly, President Tinubu recently lauded Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, praising his leadership and technological advancements in the state. This public endorsement from the president further adds fuel to the speculation of growing APC alliances among PDP governors.
Meanwhile, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang was among the first to visit President Tinubu during the holiday season, signaling potential political shifts.
Rumors Swirl Around Delta Governor’s Alleged Defection Plans
Amid these developments, a group of concerned PDP leaders in Delta State has raised alarms over rumors that Governor Oborevwori may be planning to defect to the APC to secure his position ahead of the 2027 elections. In an open letter to the governor, the group urged him to clarify the situation and put an end to the swirling speculations.
The letter, signed by prominent PDP figures such as Theophilus Ekiyor, Ochuko Oghenekome, and Ezekiel Chukwudi, expressed concern over the governor’s rumored secret meetings with key APC figures, including President Tinubu’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. The group fears that Oborevwori’s alleged plans to join the ruling party could signal a major shift in the state’s political landscape.
They have demanded that the governor clarify his intentions, warning that any delay in his response could further fuel suspicions of his possible defection.
As 2027 approaches, it seems the political landscape is in flux, with several PDP governors potentially making moves to align with the APC. Whether these defections materialize or remain as rumors will be a key factor in shaping the political scene in the coming years.
