Banditry, kidnapping turned Northwest, Northcentral vulnerable to hunger, starvation – Kano govt
The Northwest and North Central States of Nigeria have been described as the most devastated Zones in terms of banditry, kidnapping and other related crimes, making the areas vulnerable to heavy problems of hunger and starvation.
These were the submissions of the Coordinator, Northwestern Zone Permanent Secretaries, Lauratu Ado Diso at the Biannual Review Meeting on Implementation of Food Systems Transformation Pathways In Nigeria on Monday.
Diso, who is also the Permanent Secretary, Kano State Ministry of Budget and Planning, appealed to her colleagues to strengthen efforts in tackling the problems of hunger and criminality in the zone.
“We are all aware that this review aims to provide a critical analysis of the progress made so far and the implementation of the food system in respective states and the key ministries and agencies.
Lauratu, however, expressed worry that the devastation of Northwest/Northeast zones by the bandits, kidnappers and insurgents, now makes farming activities virtually impossible in some areas.
She said the zone has now become the most vulnerable among all, in terms of malnutrition and hunger scale due to the threat to farming.
“Therefore, we must double our efforts in eradicating this menace. We must put all hands on deck to do whatever it takes to change this narrative or change the negative situation into a positive one. This could only be possible through effective implementation of Food System Transformation PathWays in all farms, and will only be possible through collaboration and coordination,” she advised.
She explained that hosting a meeting of this nature shows the total commitment of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to address the lingering issues in the entire food system within the state.
