Group Condemns Brutal Mob Killing Of Mentally Challenged Woman In Kwara, Demands Justice
A civic group, the National Coalition Against Mass Killings, Extra-Judicial Killings, Mob Actions and Impunity (NCAMKI), has condemned the brutal mob killing of a mentally challenged woman identified as Khadijat in Ilorin, Kwara State.
Khadijat was attacked and lynched by a mob on Thursday, August 21, 2025. Eyewitnesses said she was pounced upon without mercy.
In a statement on Thursday signed by its Interim Administrator, Babatunde Agunbiade, NCAMKI described the killing as “an assault on humanity, decency, and the rule of law,” warning that Kwara State was fast acquiring a notorious reputation for mob actions and lawless violence.
“This incident is not an isolated one. Kwara State is fast acquiring a notorious reputation for mob actions and lawless violence,” it said.
“Such barbarity erodes the dignity of human life, deepens fear, and damages the reputation of the state. This was not just an attack on an individual—it was an assault on humanity, decency, and the rule of law,” the coalition said.
The group also linked recurring mob violence in Kwara to deep-seated socioeconomic failures, including poor mental healthcare, lack of social services, insecurity, and widespread impunity.
“These recurring acts of mob violence are deeply rooted in the denial of socioeconomic rights—from mental healthcare to basic social services, justice, and security. The state has a duty to protect its most vulnerable citizens. When that duty fails, ignorance, frustration, and impunity thrive,” NCAMKI added.
The coalition issued three key demands: Justice for Khadijat, saying the Nigeria Police Force must swiftly investigate the crime, identify and apprehend the culprits, and charge them before a competent court.
It added, “Responsibility of the Kwara State Government: The state must intensify efforts to guarantee the socioeconomic rights of residents, including access to mental healthcare, education, housing, and livelihood.
“An End to Impunity: The case must not be swept aside like the unresolved Yelwata massacre. Justice must be visible and enforceable.”
The coalition further warned that it would escalate its campaign both locally and internationally until justice is served.
“NCAMKI will henceforth escalate our actions—locally, nationally, and internationally—until justice is served for Khadijat and others who have fallen to mob violence and impunity. The cries of Khadijat’s children and family must not go unanswered. Her death is a stain on the conscience of Kwara State and Nigeria at large,” the statement added.
