Human rights commission records 56,000 cases in Bauchi
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Bauchi State has recorded a total of 56,553 cases of human rights violations between January and December 2024.
The State Coordinator of the Commission, Barrister Yahcit Dala, made the disclosure during the closing ceremony of the 2024 16 Days of Activism, marked with a road walk in Bauchi.
Yahcit Dala disclosed that the Commission has made significant progress in resolving many of the cases brought before it, while others are still undergoing investigations.
The Coordinator outlined the types of complaints received by the Commission, which include violations of civil and political rights, economic and social rights, as well as women and children’s rights.
According to her, the most prevalent complaints involved gender-based violence, domestic violence, and neglect of parental responsibilities.
Barrister Dala explained further that the State office of the NHRC has been engaging with the government and other stakeholders to address human rights issues, achieving notable successes in the process.
She highlighted collaborations with key organizations such as the state government, Ministry of Women Affairs, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Education, and the Bauchi State Committee on Gender-Based Violence.
The Coordinator also acknowledged the role of media organizations in amplifying the Commission’s efforts, urging residents of Bauchi State to report any human rights violations without fear of being charged.
Yahcit Dala stressed the need for collective action in the fight against human rights violations, calling on all stakeholders to join hands in promoting and protecting human rights in the state.
The road walk, which started from the Commission’s office to Yelwa Road Roundabout and back, featured civil society organizations (CSOs) and media practitioners.
