“NUT in Ebonyi Takes Action: Strike Begins Over Three-Month Salary Backlog”

The Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) in Ebonyi State has declared an indefinite strike across seven local government areas due to the non-payment of at least three months’ worth of salaries to some teachers in the affected areas.

In a statement issued by the union’s secretary, Bassey Asuquo, the affected local government areas were listed as Ebonyi, Edda, Ezza South, Ezza North, Ivo, Ishielu, and Ohaukwu.

The statement reads: “Following our earlier notice about mobilizing for industrial action, we have thoroughly reviewed the compliance of local government chairmen concerning the clearance of our members’ salaries. As of the close of work on February 5, 2025, we acknowledge that some local government areas have cleared the salaries of our members.”

However, the union expressed disappointment that many local government chairmen had failed to clear the backlog of outstanding salaries for teachers. In response to this non-compliance, the union declared an indefinite strike beginning at 12:00 am on Thursday, February 6, 2025, in the affected local government areas.

The union’s statement further instructed all state and branch officers in the affected areas to enforce the strike, organize solidarity picket lines, and monitor compliance with the action.

The NUT made it clear that the failure of the local government chairmen to meet their obligations to teachers was unacceptable, and vowed to remain firm in its demands. The union called on all members to remain resolute and continue supporting the strike action until their issues are resolved.
