Ogun warns drivers against repairing faulty vehicles on highways
The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps has warned truck drivers against repairing broken-down vehicles on the highway to reduce road accidents.
The TRACE equally warned them to desist from drunk driving and driving against traffic to avoid mishaps during the festive season.
The South-West Zonal Commander of TRACE, Ajibade Adekunle, gave the warning in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday in the Ota area of the state.
Adekunle said that the crash that claimed 10 lives on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Tuesday morning, could have been avoidable if the broken-down vehicle had been towed off the road instead of leaving it on the highway.
He added that the Corps Commander of TRACE, Mr Semi Ogunyemi, has mandated all its personnel to embark on 24-hour surveillance patrol across the state to eliminate road accidents.
He, however, urged motorists to drive carefully during this yuletide, particularly near failed portions of the highway.
He cited human error as a major factor contributing to numerous road traffic crashes that have occurred recently in the state
The TRACE boss said that the two accidents involving motorcycles and trucks on Dec. 8, could have been averted if simple safety rules and regulations had been adhered to.
“The TRACE commander is not happy with the recent crashes in the state and has directed the personnel of the agency to embark on intensive sensitisation to educate the public.
“We are therefore appealing to motorists to contact TRACE and FRSC for appropriate actions to be taken when their vehicles develop fault on the highway to prevent unnecessary loss of lives,” he said.
