PDP National Working Committee Eyes More Governors in 2027, Vows to End APC Rule
The National Working Committee (NWC) of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has declared its commitment to producing more governors in the 2027 elections, citing widespread disenchantment across the country due to the ongoing economic hardship.
The NWC members made this declaration during a visit to Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, at his country home in Sampou, Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area, on Sunday. Speaking on behalf of the NWC, the National Treasurer, Alhaji Ahmed Yayare, emphasized that the PDP was the only opposition party capable of challenging and potentially overtaking the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
Yayare noted, “Nothing stops the PDP from producing the president and the vice president in 2027. The cry of hunger and poverty is too loud across the land. The 36 states of Nigeria are yearning for the return of PDP.” He stressed that the current government’s inability to campaign without facing hostility from the public demonstrated the mounting frustration with the APC.
The NWC is preparing to canvass support in PDP-led states as part of its strategy for the upcoming elections, with a call for unity among the governors to work towards the common goal of reclaiming power. Yayare further warned that if the PDP does not reclaim leadership, Nigeria’s democracy might be at risk.
During the visit, the NWC also took time to commiserate with Governor Diri over the deaths of the Deputy Inspector General of Police (rtd), Moses Jituboh, and the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Elizabeth Bidei.
PDP National Secretary, Ude Okoye, expressed the NWC’s intention to reposition the party, reinforcing that the PDP would be a viable alternative to the current administration. He praised Governor Diri for his exemplary leadership and significant contributions to Bayelsa’s development, stressing that the party was proud of his achievements.
Governor Diri, in his response, emphasized the importance of unity among PDP members, especially its governors, who he believes are essential in the party’s quest to return to power. He stressed the need for consensus-building and cautioned against allowing political disagreements to tear the party apart. “If PDP dies in our hands, posterity will not forgive us,” Diri warned.
He also expressed his full support for the party’s efforts to strengthen its unity and leadership, including the idea of forming a mega party that would lead Nigeria to a brighter future. He called on his fellow governors to put aside political differences and work together to save the country from its current decline.
