Peculiar Allowance Delay: Judiciary Staff Union Shelves Planned Strike, Issues Warning

The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) has shelved its planned industrial action scheduled for November 1.

Recall that the union had alerted its members to proceed on indefinite strike if the payment of 40% Peculiar Allowance was not made at the end of November.

But hours before the planned strike, JUSUN leadership met with officials of the National Judicial Council, Chief Registrars of FCT, Federal Courts, and Secretaries of judicial bodies, where a truce was reached.

In a communique issued at the end of the meeting, JUSUN warned that failure to implement the agreement reached at the meeting would lead to an indefinite strike without notice.

The communique reads partly, “That implementation of 40% Peculiar Allowance would commence from November, while the arrears from January to October 2023 will be appropriated in the 2024 budget.

“The NJC in conjunction with all the chief registrars of FCT and federal courts and secretaries of judiciary bodies, agreed to carry JUSUN along in the 2024 Appropriation Budget for the Arrears of peculiar Allowances.

“The failure to implement the above agreement at the end of November salary, JUSUN has no choice but to embark on an indefinite strike without notice.

“Based on the above agreements, JUSUN resolved to put the strike on hold”.
