‘We Don’t Even Offer Stem Cell Treatment’: Nizamiye Hospital Debunks Allegations in Kontagora’s Death
Abuja, Nigeria – The management of Nizamiye Hospital, Abuja, has refuted allegations that it denied critical medical treatment to former Senator Ibrahim Musa Kontagora over a supposed shortfall in payment.
The late senator, who represented Niger North Senatorial District from 2011 to 2015, reportedly died after spending over a week in a coma at the facility. Following his death, an online report alleged that Nizamiye refused to perform a life-saving procedure due to unpaid bills amounting to $30,000.
Speaking with Daily Trust, the hospital’s Public Relations Officer, Mohammed Abubakar, described the claims as “false, misleading, and malicious.”
“The patient was transferred from another hospital and was admitted immediately. A shunt procedure was performed on arrival to relieve blood clotting in the brain,” Abubakar explained.
He clarified that no further surgery was scheduled and that the advanced stem cell therapy later suggested to the family was not offered at Nizamiye.
“Stem cell treatment is not a service we provide. It’s handled by international specialists. If families express interest, we can help them connect with such professionals abroad,” he said.
On the claim that the hospital demanded $30,000 upfront, Abubakar dismissed it outright.
“We do not charge in dollars. There’s no record of a $15,000 payment or any outstanding balance for stem cell therapy. In fact, the patient’s hospital account still has unused funds.”
He emphasized that no advance payment was requested for any procedure following the initial shunt operation, further stating that the hospital maintains a transparent billing process.
The hospital urged the public to disregard the report, which it labeled baseless and damaging, and called on media outlets to exercise responsibility and caution when reporting on sensitive medical matters.
“If anyone claims there was a pending surgery or financial dispute, let them provide evidence. We stand by our medical team and the care given,” Abubakar said.
The hospital’s statement comes amid growing calls for accountability and clarity in the healthcare sector, especially regarding treatment of high-profile individuals.
