The Oba community in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State is embroiled in controversy following the recent election and installation of a new monarch. The election of Sir Augustine Chinedu Emelobe as the new Igwe to replace the late monarch, Igwe PC Ezenwa, has sparked a significant uproar.
The state’s Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Community Matters, Hon. TonyCollins Nwabunwanne, criticized the election, challenging its legitimacy and claiming that it did not follow the proper channels. The situation grew more contentious after reports emerged suggesting that Governor Charles Soludo had not endorsed the election process, although this was later refuted by community leaders who argued that Soludo had no objections.
Despite these protests, the installation ceremony proceeded on Monday with the presentation of the Ọfọ Oba, the highest staff of authority, by the elders of Urueze, Oba’s eldest village. This traditional act marked the formal installation of Emelobe as the Igwe-elect, but tensions lingered, with some community members continuing to question the fairness of the process.
After the traditional rites, Emelobe was led to St. Bethel Anglican Church to dedicate his leadership to God, yet the shadows of dissent still loom large over the community, as many remain unconvinced by the legitimacy of the election.
