Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has boldly described the rehabilitation and restart of the Warri Refinery and Petrochemical Company (WRPC) as a New Year gift to Nigerians, claiming that it signals a positive turnaround for the nation’s petroleum sector. The governor expressed his support for the federal government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, emphasizing that Edo State remains fully committed to Nigeria’s mission of becoming a global hub for crude oil refining in Africa.
While Governor Okpebholo lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) for the successful revival of the Warri refinery, some critics argue that his statement may be politically motivated, seeking to bolster the image of the ongoing reforms.
The restart of the 125,000 barrels-per-day (bpd) Warri refinery, alongside the Port Harcourt and Dangote refineries, has been heralded as a sign of hope for the Nigerian petroleum sector. However, questions remain about the tangible benefits these restorations will bring to the average Nigerian.
Okpebholo congratulated both President Tinubu and the NNPCL under Mele Kyari’s leadership, but many are left wondering whether this truly marks a sustainable shift in Nigeria’s petroleum sector or if it’s simply another symbolic gesture ahead of the new year.
